Bitcoin Bulls Enjoy Monster Quarter Amid Crypto Security Concerns
The third quarter saw a significant surge in Bitcoin's value, closing at a 40% increase. This impressive rally was met with billions of dollars flowing into exchange-traded funds tied to BTC and other tokens, leading analysts to believe that a new bull run has begun.
However, amidst this growth, the crypto industry suffered a notable setback in terms of security. According to data from CertiK, there were 247 security incidents in the third quarter, resulting in losses totaling $1.26 billion. This figure brings the total losses for the year so far to $2.68 billion.
The month of September was particularly concerning, with 99 incidents reported and a staggering $768.5 million stolen, marking the largest monthly haul of the year.
Nicolai Sondergaard, senior research analyst at Nansen, commented that the reputational damage caused by these hacks can be significant. He noted that 'the reputational damage can still be larger than the losses themselves.' Sondergaard also pointed out that repeated exploits reinforce the idea that crypto infrastructure remains operationally fragile.
