Bitcoin Buyers Can Now Use Cryptocurrency as Collateral for Home Loans

Bitcoin holders in the United States can now use their cryptocurrency as collateral for a home loan without selling their coins. Better Mortgage and Coinbase have launched a real estate loan program that allows eligible customers to finance their down payment using Bitcoin.

The product, which is available to eligible Better customers, allows borrowers to retain exposure to Bitcoin throughout the loan duration. No need to sell their BTC, the cryptocurrency remains in a custody account on Coinbase Prime until the loan is repaid or refinanced.

The setup combines two loans: a classic conforming mortgage loan following Fannie Mae rules and another financing the down payment using Bitcoin as collateral. Both loans share the same interest rate and amortization period, with borrowers making a single monthly payment.
