Bitcoin Closes Above 50-Week Moving Average After 45-Week Slump
Bitcoin has finally broken above its 50-week moving average for the first time since November 2025, closing at $81,159 on September 20. This comes after a 45-week period where Bitcoin traded below this key trend indicator.
The last time Bitcoin managed to close above the 50-week moving average was on November 9, 2025. A recent surge pushed Bitcoin past its current level, accompanied by heightened whale activity and short liquidations.
Bitcoin has made a significant recovery from its cycle low of approximately $58,525 on June 30, 2026, representing a 53% drawdown from the October 2025 peak above $124,000. The September 20 close means Bitcoin has recovered roughly 39% in fewer than three months.
Galaxy Research head Alex Thorn notes that historically, when Bitcoin reclaims this level after a bear-market breakdown, it does not result in new cycle lows in most cases.
