Bitcoin Completes First Quantum-Safe Transaction Without Protocol Changes
The Bitcoin mainnet has confirmed its first quantum-safe transaction using StarkWare researcher Avihu Levy's Quantum-Safe Bitcoin (QSB) method. This method replaces traditional elliptic-curve cryptography with hash-based protections to resist quantum attacks, without requiring changes to Bitcoin's consensus rules or a soft fork.
The process involves costly off-chain computation and direct miner submission, making it impractical for everyday use. Despite this, the transaction proves QSB can work under current rules, showing that broader upgrades are still being studied to protect against future quantum threats.
