Bitcoin Consolidates at $84,000 Ahead of Q4
Bitcoin's price has been consolidating around $84,000 as it heads into its fourth quarter. The median Q3 return for bitcoin is just 2.2 percent, but Bitcoin is still up 42.5 percent from its quarterly open of $58,585.
The aggregated futures open interest (OI) in Bitcoin has fallen to its lowest since March, with a decline of 49,000 BTC over the past week. This drop in OI has historically supported price action, and since 2022, elevated futures settlement ratios paired with compressed carry have preceded a median 30-day gain of 8.9 percent.
However, despite the strong quarterly performance, Bitcoin's underlying market has changed significantly. Implied volatility (IV) sits close to a one-year low, and Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) inflows have slowed to roughly match the pace of new bitcoin issuance. As a result, the next sustained move will need to be led by spot demand.
The current distribution of cost basis levels shows that there is 1.39 million BTC in overhead supply between $84,000 and $86,500. This represents both long-term holders who are still underwater from last year's prices as well as recent buyers who are now marginally below their entry points.
