Bitcoin Correlation With Gold Hits Historic Highs as Risk Profile Shifts
Bitcoin's risk profile is changing as its correlation with gold surges to historic highs. According to Adam Livingston's analysis, Bitcoin's 120-day correlation with gold reached the 99.5th percentile of all readings since 2020. This shift in Bitcoin's macro relationships also saw its realized volatility sit in the bottom fifth of the historical range.
Historically, Bitcoin acted like a high-beta technology stock, but now it is trading more like a monetary asset with continued risk-on exposure. The correlation between Bitcoin and gold has increased significantly relative to the equity space, while the relationship between cryptocurrency and equities has weakened over certain periods.
The current market setup sees Bitcoin approaching the $82,000 area, reminiscent of May 2026 when it reached $83,000, consolidated, and then declined by 26%. The U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates, but growth continued, drawing attention to this historical parallel.
