Bitcoin Could Hit $500,000 by 2030, Edelman Predicts, Comparing Trajectory to Amazon's Breakout
Ric Edelman, founder of Edelman Financial Engines, has predicted that Bitcoin could reach $500,000 by 2030. He made this forecast based on a simple arithmetic model, which assumes a modest but widespread shift in how global investors allocate capital to the cryptocurrency.
Edelman's thesis is that if investors worldwide dedicate just 1% of their portfolio holdings to Bitcoin, the implied price would work out to roughly $500,000 per coin. He described this figure as conservative relative to other forecasts circulating in the industry.
The comparison at the heart of his argument draws on Amazon.com Inc.'s (AMZN) experience in 1999, when professional money managers openly questioned whether the e-commerce company belonged in client portfolios. Edelman noted that traditional finance professionals who pushed back against cryptocurrency in 2013 and 2014 now treat it as a permanent asset class.
Edelman also argued that adding Bitcoin to a portfolio can improve risk-adjusted returns due to its tendency to move independently of traditional markets, or 'zig when the others zag'. This behavior creates rebalancing opportunities that can dampen overall portfolio volatility. He cited 16 years of historical performance data and established metrics like the Sharpe ratio in support of his claim.
