Bitcoin Covenant Atlas Maps Out Decade-Long Debate

Covenant proposals for Bitcoin have been discussed and debated for over a decade. However, until now, there hasn't been a clear visual map showing what they could actually do. Cofund, a company focused on Bitcoin multisig treasury applications, has published an interactive atlas called 'The Covenants Use-Case Atlas.' This project catalogs more than 24 distinct covenant use cases in an interactive format.

The atlas covers everything from foundational vault designs to exotic implementations like Ark non-interactive issuance and payment pools. For the uninitiated, covenants are a proposed class of Bitcoin script upgrades that would let transactions include conditions on how funds can be spent in the future.

Covenant-enabled designs could remove the need for central coordinators in mining pools, allowing miners to participate without trusting a third party to handle distribution fairly. Decentralized options also appear in the atlas, pointing toward Bitcoin-native financial instruments constructed without relying on external platforms or wrapped tokens on other chains.
