Bitcoin Crumbles Below $80K as Gold and Bond Yields Suffer
Bitcoin's momentum fizzled out as it fell below $80,000 on Tuesday, mirroring the decline in gold prices. The US Treasury's bond yields also cooled down, dropping to their lowest levels since August 7.
The $80,000 zone, previously seen as a strong selling area, proved difficult for Bitcoin to reclaim. This was despite the cryptocurrency reaching new 14-week highs of $81,265 earlier in the day.
Gold prices also declined, with XAU/USD hitting local lows of $4,605 per ounce, a nearly 2% drop on the day. The decline in gold and crypto prices came as US equities posted modest gains, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite Index rising 0.2% and 0.5%, respectively.
The cooling bond yields have sparked concerns about interest rates and their impact on cryptocurrency markets. Trading firm QCP Capital pointed out that the Fed cannot cut rates in the current inflation environment, making direct bond market intervention a potential solution to drive interest rates lower.
