Bitcoin Defies Volatility, Holds Ground at $78,000 as 'Digital Gold' Narrative Gains Traction
Bitcoin is trading at $78,062 after a sharp pullback from its three-month highs above $81,000. The cryptocurrency's price has been holding steady, testing renewed claims that it is increasingly being treated as 'digital gold' rather than a high-beta technology asset.
A Grayscale report shows that Bitcoin's 90-day correlation with gold has climbed above 50%, from barely above zero at the start of the year. Meanwhile, its correlation with tech stocks has fallen to roughly 33% from above 60%. This shift suggests investors may be increasingly treating Bitcoin as a scarce monetary asset rather than a proxy for technology stocks.
The 'debasement trade', which favors scarce assets such as gold and Bitcoin, is gaining traction due to concerns about U.S. fiscal policy after federal debt surpassed $40 trillion. Rising borrowing requirements and Treasury bond buybacks are reviving the debasement trade. On-chain activity also shows little evidence of widespread selling by Bitcoin's oldest holders.
