Bitcoin Developers Plan Network Reboot Amid Quantum Computing Uncertainty

Goldman Sachs has reportedly scaled back its quantum computing efforts for finance due to limited near-term practicality. The bank had invested in specialist staff and collaborated with Amazon to explore use cases such as portfolio optimization, but an internal study found that fixing real-world financial problems would require millions of years of processing time, using hardware well beyond what is currently accessible.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin developers are planning a 'clean reboot' of the network through a hard fork called eCash. Paul Sztorc's proposal involves creating a new version of the network with additional features and distributing 1:1 tokens to BTC holders upon launch in August. The new system aims to expand its features and support use cases such as decentralized exchanges, prediction markets, identity tools, and privacy features.

The plan has drawn criticism from some quarters, particularly regarding the redistribution of coins linked to early 'Patoshi' wallets believed to be associated with Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Peter McCormack described the idea as 'theft and disrespectful,' while others have questioned the use of the eCash name.
