Bitcoin Dominance Holds Steady at 58.3%, But Altcoin Gains Spark Season Speculation
Bitcoin's dominance over the cryptocurrency market stands at 58.3%, but some altcoins have already made significant gains, sparking questions about an upcoming 'altcoin season'.
Zcash has surged by approximately 295% in the past three months, while Bitcoin rose around 44%. This disparity has led investors to wonder if capital is shifting towards select cryptocurrencies or waiting for a broader market shift.
However, experts warn that a decline in Bitcoin's dominance can occur for two reasons: either altcoins rise faster than Bitcoin, or Bitcoin's price drops faster than other cryptocurrencies. The latter scenario would be detrimental to altcoin holders.
Stablecoins also muddy the analysis, as traders selling Bitcoin for stablecoins decrease Bitcoin's market share without necessarily increasing investment in altcoins. New stablecoin issuance can similarly dilute Bitcoin's dominance.
Some top performers include Zcash, Uniswap, and NEAR Protocol, which have made impressive gains on their own catalysts rather than a broad market move. However, these winners remain too small to significantly impact Bitcoin's overall market share.
The September 28 selloff suggests the opposite of a broad altcoin season, with total crypto market value falling about 3% and trading volume rising 125%. High trading volume on a down day often indicates forced selling, which can be detrimental to investors.
While some altcoins have already made significant gains, a widespread altcoin season requires new investment. If the market contracts further with high trading volumes, buyers pursuing Zcash and other leading altcoins may find themselves in crowded trades, creating potential challenges.
