Bitcoin Dominates Ethereum and Solana in Five-Year Performance Review
A review of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana's performance over the past five years reveals significant divergent trends. According to Binance data, Bitcoin rose from $48,306 on September 18, 2021, to $78,131, representing a gain of approximately 61.7%. In contrast, Ethereum declined by about 26.2%, falling from $3,396 to $2,507, while Solana slipped around 27.9% to $106 from its peak at $147.
Bitcoin's current price is roughly 38.1% below its all-time high of $126,198.07 reached on October 7, 2025. Ethereum and Solana remain further from their respective peaks, with the former trading around 49.4% below its record high of $4,953.73 recorded on August 25, 2025, and the latter roughly 64% below its peak at $294.33 reached on January 19, 2025.
Bitcoin's superior performance is attributed by Ryan Lee, Chief Analyst at Bitget, to its established role as a macro and institutional asset. He notes that Bitcoin's price is supported by greater ETF access and its limited-supply narrative. Ethereum and Solana, in contrast, remain more closely tied to their respective ecosystems and real-world use cases.
Analysts also highlight different catalysts for the next phase of each asset. Lee points out that Bitcoin benefits from continued institutional adoption, ETF accumulation, and integration into traditional portfolios. For Ethereum and Solana, tokenisation, stablecoin adoption, new on-chain projects, and broader blockchain adoption are key drivers.
