Bitcoin Faces $15.6 Billion Derivatives Expiry Event on Friday
The Bitcoin derivatives market is set for one of its largest single-day resets this year as approximately 182,000 BTC in options contracts expire on Deribit on Friday. The $15.6 billion notional value represents a significant event that has drawn attention from traders and analysts.
The open interest is heavily skewed toward bullish positioning, with calls dominating puts at 106,200 BTC to 75,900 BTC respectively. This imbalance reflects the broader sentiment shift captured by the Crypto Fear and Greed Index, which has been flashing greed as Bitcoin climbed from its summer correction.
While the expiry of these contracts may not dictate the direction of spot prices, it will reset positioning for a substantial portion of the options market. Market makers will need to unwind hedges, close, move, or replace existing positions in response to the settlement.
