Bitcoin Faces $16B Options Expiry as Whale Demand Builds Amid Macro-Driven Buying
Bitcoin is trading near $86,000 as it approaches a major derivatives event on September 25. On that day, nearly $16 billion in Bitcoin options will expire on Deribit. This expiry could influence short-term market conditions as options positioning can impact Bitcoin's price behavior before contracts settle.
Market makers regularly buy or sell the cryptocurrency to balance their exposure as prices change. Those hedging flows can absorb part of a market move under certain positioning conditions, potentially keeping realized volatility lower ahead of the large expiry.
Bitcoin 'whales' - wallets holding between 100 and 1,000 BTC - have accumulated 113,950 Bitcoin since July 15, according to Santiment. Their combined holdings have increased by 2.22% to 5.24 million BTC. This accumulation has continued while Bitcoin recovered and briefly touched $87,000 earlier this week.
Trace Finance co-founder Bernardo Brites said the pace of the rebound partly reflected a short squeeze. However, he cautioned against treating the move as evidence of a broad return in risk appetite, instead pointing out that the source of fresh capital entering the market remains unclear.
