Bitcoin Faces $6.3 Billion IBIT Options Wall as Fed Decision Looms
Bitcoin is facing a major test of its price movement ahead of the Federal Reserve's rate decision, which could reset expectations for rates, growth, and inflation. The Fed will release its policy statement on Wednesday, followed by Chair Jerome Powell's press conference and updated economic projections.
The next day, Friday, marks the expiry of approximately 1.47 million options contracts tied to BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT). This concentration is significant, with over a third of IBIT positioning between $40 and $45, making it a crucial area for traders to watch.
The value of these open contracts is roughly $6.28 billion, which can be mapped proportionally to Bitcoin's price movement. If Bitcoin pushes above $79,700 or below $70,900 and holds those levels through Friday, the expiry band would carry less explanatory weight, indicating stronger macro or spot-market forces driving price discovery.
Conversely, a sharp initial break followed by a return toward the $40-to-$45 IBIT zone would put expiry-related positioning back in focus, especially if open interest shifts as traders close or roll contracts. This distinction has immediate consequences for options desks, market makers, and leveraged traders, who will need to adjust their hedges accordingly.
