Bitcoin Faces Election-Related Volatility as Price Loses Momentum
Bitcoin's price has been losing momentum as it heads into the final quarter of 2026, retreating from its recent high near $87,400. This decline follows a strong September recovery, with BTC currently facing resistance at its recent highs.
The upcoming 2026 US midterm elections are scheduled for November, and Bitcoin's historical performance during election periods is a topic of interest. The token has experienced negative Q4 returns in every previous midterm year, including declines of 16.70% in 2014, 42.16% in 2018, and 14.75% in 2022.
However, the historical record also shows that Bitcoin has historically strengthened after midterm elections. A chart shared by analyst Ali compares the token's price action around US election cycles and the periods that follow, indicating a potential upward trend after election-related volatility.
For now, BTC remains above its short-term holder cost basis of around $73,000, giving it some room to maneuver before reaching key support levels. If the token extends its pullback, the $73,000 area could become an important test for the current market structure.
