Bitcoin Faces Volatility as $6.4 Billion Options Expiration Looms
The Bitcoin market is facing a significant event this week as US$6.4 billion in options expire on Deribit, the largest global cryptocurrency options platform.
This large concentration of expiring contracts could intensify short-term price movements, according to Shaun Fernando, Deribit's director of risk. He notes that nearly 20% of Bitcoin's open interest on the platform will be expiring, which is a significant amount given the recent strong market movements and changes in volatility.
The majority of these contracts are calls, with 44,639 options used for bets on higher prices and 37,061 puts, used for bets on lower prices or protection. This gives a put/call ratio of 0.83, indicating a more optimistic positioning than defensive.
The key areas to watch will be the price levels of US$75,000 and US$80,000, where there are large concentrations of calls with interest worth approximately US$236 million and US$157 million, respectively. As Bitcoin has recently traded around these levels, this expiration event becomes more relevant for price dynamics.
