Bitcoin Facing Resistance Near $87K as Whale Activity Rises
Bitcoin's recent recovery above $86,000 is facing significant resistance near $87,000, preventing a clear rally toward $90,000. Bullish momentum is being capped by rising whale-related exchange activity, elevated Treasury yields, and crude oil prices surpassing $100. While demand for Bitcoin ETFs remains positive, these factors are contributing to a cautious market outlook.
The Exchange Whale Ratio, a metric tracking large holder activity, is approaching 0.30-0.35, suggesting increased movement of significant BTC holdings. Although this activity does not automatically indicate selling, repeated rejections near $87,000 raise concerns about potential sell-side pressure. Additionally, the number of transactions worth over $100,000 remains high, further indicating heightened activity among large holders.
Exchange inflows of 10-100 BTC have been rising, while larger transfers (100-1,000 BTC and above) show choppy movement. This suggests that meaningful amounts of Bitcoin are still moving through exchanges at a time when the price struggles to break through resistance. Institutional demand, as seen in U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF inflows of $102.7 million on October 1 and $189.9 million on October 2, is providing some support. However, growing derivatives positioning, including a $2.3 billion increase in open interest, introduces risks of long-position unwinding if the breakout fails.
The macroeconomic environment adds another layer of complexity, with the 10-year Treasury yield holding around 5.26% and oil prices remaining elevated. While a weaker September jobs report has reduced expectations for an October Fed rate hike, Bitcoin has yet to benefit from significant liquidity boosts. To confirm a rally, Bitcoin must sustain a move above $87,000, $87,500 with stronger spot demand, otherwise, sell-side pressure could persist.
