Bitcoin Fork Failure Highlights Challenges of Replicating Original Launch Conditions
A recent Bitcoin fork attempt, BIP-110, has highlighted the challenges of replicating the cryptocurrency's original launch conditions. The failed fork showed how difficult it would be to recreate Bitcoin today, according to Giacomo Zucco of Plan B Network.
The BIP-110 fork, which was backed by longtime Bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr, sought consensus changes to curb activity supporters considered spam. However, the proposal ultimately led to a split in nodes, with only a small fraction of hash power joining the breakaway chain.
Despite Dashjr's efforts to keep the fork alive, including changing the proof-of-work algorithm, the breakaway chain stalled after two blocks. Zucco said that the episode showed how quickly a supposedly fair launch can become centralized under a single decision-maker.
Zucco also noted that modern incentives and deliberate disruption make it difficult to reproduce Bitcoin's early conditions. He contrasted the failed fork with Bitcoin's formative years, when the network developed with far less attention from markets, governments, speculators, and people trying to disrupt the process.
