James Howells' 12-year ordeal to recover his lost Bitcoin fortune has been turned into an indie game by developer Paiden. The game, which is still in development, will challenge players to find a hard drive containing 8,000 Bitcoins worth over $632 million in today's market.

Howells' story began when he accidentally threw away the private key for his Bitcoin fortune on a mobile phone-sized hard drive during a clearing of his office. His partner at the time took the rubbish to a local tip, and despite Howells' efforts to retrieve it, the hard drive was buried under 25,000 cubic meters of waste and earth.

Howells spent years searching for his lost Bitcoins, employing the use of AI and even attempting to purchase the landfill site where the hard drive was buried. However, he eventually gave up his search in August 2025 and announced plans to create a new cryptocurrency called Ceiniog Coin.
