Bitcoin Futures Notional Value Hits Two-Year Low
The notional value of Bitcoin futures has dropped to its lowest level in two years. This represents a significant decline from its peak, where it was around $70 billion. The ratio of futures notional to spot market activity has fallen to 0.24x, indicating that traders are pulling back from leveraged positions.
This development is largely due to the decline of basis trades, which were once lucrative but have since compressed to around 3-5% annualized yield. Basis trades involve buying spot Bitcoin and selling futures contracts at a premium, with the goal of pocketing the difference when the contract expires.
Perpetual contracts and options markets have absorbed much of the speculative activity that once lived in traditional dated futures. However, this shift has also led to diminished speculative engagement, as evidenced by CryptoQuant's analysis of Binance's futures-to-spot deployment ratio.
