Bitcoin Hacks Expose Hidden Dependencies in Trusted Systems
The recent exploits of the Coldcard hardware wallet and the Liquid Network sidechain have raised concerns about the security of Bitcoin's underlying systems. While they do not rank as the most serious security incidents in Bitcoin's history, these hacks represent a more dangerous development than traditional exchange hacks.
Unlike previous disasters like Mt. Gox and FTX, which were caused by user error or centralized exchanges, the Coldcard and Liquid Network vulnerabilities occurred within trusted systems used by diligent users who followed established security practices.
The Coldcard hack, in particular, exposed a critical firmware flaw that allowed remote attackers to brute-force recovery seed phrases generated by the devices. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dependencies that persist even when self-custody wallets are used.
