Bitcoin Halving Countdown Hits 57%, Next Reward Cut Looms
The Bitcoin network has quietly reached the halfway mark to its next block reward halving. Approximately 57% of the 210,000 blocks needed for the event have been mined, leaving roughly 90,170 blocks between now and the cut in miner rewards.
Bitcoin's current block height is around 959,700-959,828. The next halving will occur at block 1,050,000, which puts the estimated date somewhere between April 13 and April 17, 2028.
The mining reward will drop from 3.125 BTC per block to 1.5625 BTC when the halving occurs. This is a significant reduction, with each of the previous four halvings cutting the reward in half.
Over 94% of all Bitcoin that will ever exist has already been mined, and the network's hard cap of 21 million BTC means that each halving event compresses the remaining issuance into an ever-smaller trickle.
