Bitcoin Halving Nears with Fewer Than 80000 Blocks Remaining
Bitcoin’s fifth halving is now fewer than 80,000 blocks away, with the event set to occur around April 12, 2028, at block height 1050000. This will reduce block rewards from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC, marking a significant supply squeeze. As of October 5, 2026, 61% of the blocks needed for the halving have been mined, leaving approximately 79,950 blocks remaining.
The upcoming halving will have a profound impact on Bitcoin’s supply. After the event, miners will produce around 225 BTC per day, cutting annual supply inflation to just 0.4%. This contrasts sharply with the current rate, where miners produce 450 BTC daily. By the time of the halving, roughly 20.34 million BTC will be in circulation, up from the current 20,093,613.63 BTC.
Bitcoin’s price is currently hovering around $86,000, and historically, prices tend to rise ahead of halvings. The T-500 period, which marks 500 days before the halving, is just 55 days away. Some analysts view this as an optimal timeframe to purchase BTC, citing past cycles that delivered significant gains. However, there is no guarantee that history will repeat itself, and skeptics argue this cycle could break the pattern.
Despite Bitcoin’s current bear market, many die-hard BTC proponents believe the four-year cycle is already over or “dead.” Whether this is true remains to be seen, as diminished new supply has historically helped propel prices higher in the following year.
