Bitcoin Heirs Face Permanently Lost Fortunes Without Keys
A significant portion of Bitcoin is lost forever when its owner dies due to lack of access to the wallet keys.
Estimates suggest that around 3.7 million BTC, valued at approximately $315 billion as of October 4, 2026, are permanently locked on the blockchain because their heirs cannot find the necessary keys.
When it comes to inheriting Bitcoin, the situation is different for self-custodied wallets versus those held through a brokerage account or ETF. The former requires direct access to the wallet keys, while the latter can be transferred with documentation similar to traditional stocks.
It's crucial not to include the seed phrase directly in a will, as this information becomes public during probate and can be exploited by others before heirs take action.
