Bitcoin Hits $80,000 Barrier Amid Treasury Buybacks and Supply Wall
The Treasury Department's announcement to double its government debt repurchase operations has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency market, pushing Bitcoin's price above $80,000 for the first time since May.
Bitcoin's surge has been described as 'violent and fast,' with a 23% weekly advance in its strongest performance in three years. The coin is now up approximately 27% over the past month and 38% from its June low of $58,756.
The technical picture above spot is dense, with the previous swing high at $82,850 and the 50-week moving average at $81,081. This level carries significant historical weight, as it has functioned as a clean bull-bear demarcation in Bitcoin's chart since November 2025.
The Treasury program's buyback announcements have been cited as the catalyst for this move, with more than $3 billion in short liquidations triggered on August 19 alone. The government's intervention removed the premise of the trade that had been profitable for six weeks, forcing positions to become forced buyers of spot and perpetual contracts.
The resulting bid has compounded across eight consecutive sessions, underpinning the current price action. However, this level also coincides with a significant supply wall, with nearly 8% of total Bitcoin supply acquired inside the $80,000 to $82,000 band.
