Bitcoin Hits Critical Crossroads as BIP-110 Deadline Approaches with Unpatched Bugs Looming
Bitcoin is at a critical crossroads as it enters the final ordinary 2,016-block window for BIP-110. Miner support stands at 0.89%, and if this level stays below 55% by August, the mandatory version-bit phase can begin.
The proposal, framed by Jameson Lopp as part of Bitcoin's next agenda along with Consensus Cleanup and quantum preparation, requires different forms of consent from developers, miners, node operators, exchanges, custodians, and holders.
Four unpatched bugs are set to be addressed in the upcoming upgrade queue. The first is the timewarp attack, which allows majority hash power to push mining difficulty toward its minimum within 38 days, pulling subsidy forward through faster block production and altering miner incentives.
