Bitcoin Holder Loses $282 Million After Sharing Seed Phrase

A bitcoin and litecoin holder lost $282 million in January 2026 after handing over their 12-word recovery phrase to someone posing as Trezor support.

The scammer didn't need to break any encryption; they just needed the victim's seed phrase. The attacker then moved fast, splitting the funds across THORChain bridges and instantly exchanging them into monero through peel-chain transfers within minutes.

A small portion of the stolen funds was frozen by ZeroShadow's monitoring team 20 minutes later, but most remains unrecoverable due to its being laundered.

The loss highlights a critical issue with seed phrases: they're not just passwords; they're the entire wallet. Whoever holds them holds the funds.
