Bitcoin Holds Steady Near $78,000 Amid Inflation Concerns and Options Expiry
Bitcoin has been holding steady near $78,000 after a brief dip following a hot PCE inflation reading. The data showed prices up 3.7% annually, hotter than forecasted, and core PCE held at 3.3%. This combination of higher-for-longer rate expectations tends to strengthen the dollar and lift bond yields, pulling money away from assets that pay no yield.
A $6.4 billion options expiry is set for Friday on Deribit, with the current max pain level sitting near $78,000, below Bitcoin's current price. This could lead to intense hedging activity as dealers who sold call options may need to buy the underlying asset to stay hedged.
Nvidia earnings will also be released after the bell on Wednesday, and traders are watching for a strong beat with confident guidance, which could pull more capital into risk assets broadly and extend the dip-buying in Bitcoin. A miss or cautious guidance on AI spending could do the opposite and drag tech stocks and crypto lower together.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's first keynote at Jackson Hole will also be closely watched for any hints on rate decisions, with futures pricing showing a 38.4% chance of a September rate hike, down from 82% a month ago.
