Bitcoin Home Mining Profitability Hinges on Cheap Electricity

Bitcoin home mining can be profitable in 2026, but it depends on several factors. Electricity costs and hardware efficiency are two of the biggest considerations.

The average US household pays around $0.16 to $0.20 per kilowatt-hour for electricity, which is higher than the break-even rate for most mining machines. However, if a miner can secure electricity at rates below $0.09 per kilowatt-hour, they may be able to cover their operating costs.

Newer, more efficient hardware such as the Antminer S23 Hydro can tolerate higher electricity prices, but even these machines break even at around 12.4¢/kWh.
