Bitcoin Investors Withdraw $3.3 Billion from Binance Amid Mixed Market Signals
Bitcoin investors have pulled a significant amount of the cryptocurrency from Binance in recent weeks. Over 40,000 BTC, valued at approximately $3.3 billion, have been withdrawn from the exchange since September 20, marking the strongest withdrawal pace since June 2023. Analyst Darkfost from CryptoQuant noted that last week alone saw about 23,100 BTC withdrawn, with the trend continuing into early this week.
The movement of BTC off exchanges is often interpreted as a sign of accumulation, as investors move their holdings into private custody rather than keeping them on exchanges where they can be easily sold. Binance, holding the largest reserves of any exchange, is closely watched for such signals. Despite the outflows, Bitcoin's price has remained relatively stable, trading near $86,000, down slightly over 24 hours.
However, the situation is more nuanced. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded their first daily outflow in October, with a net outflow of roughly $90 million. BlackRock's IBIT was the only fund to see inflows among the twelve ETFs tracked. This shift comes amid a significant drop in weekly net inflows, which collapsed 87.7% to $208.1 million. Glassnode attributed this to an increased profit-taking pressure, as the ETF MVRV ratio rose to 1.5, indicating large unrealized gains for the average ETF holder.
Futures markets also show mixed signals. While futures open interest fell 3.8% over the week to $36.6 billion, the cost of maintaining bullish bets increased, with daily funding payments rising 57.3% to $1.5 million. Despite this, leverage in the system remains high. On the network level, active addresses rose 6.1% on the week, and the portion of network value held by new investors climbed to 19.5% from 18.9%, suggesting continued interest from new buyers.
