Bitcoin Losses Can Now Offset Share Gains in Austria

Instruments
BTC
Share

Austrian tax law allows investors to offset losses on Bitcoin against gains in shares.

This means that if an investor realizes a gain of €10,000 from selling shares and incurs a loss of €4,000 from selling Bitcoin, they can reduce the taxable income by the amount of the loss. This applies as long as both positions are held as private assets and are subject to the same tax rate of 27.5 percent.

The offset between crypto income and gains on shares does not happen automatically, however. Investors have to apply for the loss offset through their income tax assessment.
