Bitcoin Miners Cash In on AI Power Infrastructure Boom
Bitcoin miners are rapidly pivoting to power AI infrastructure as demand for electricity surges. The shift has turned these companies into something akin to 'power landlords' for the artificial intelligence boom.
The economics of hosting AI workloads on existing mining facilities are hard to argue with, given that an AI tenant can generate roughly $1.5 million per megawatt annually compared to Bitcoin mining's $500,000 per megawatt.
Major miners like Core Scientific and TeraWulf have signed massive contracts worth tens of billions of dollars for GPU cloud services and high-performance computing. Hut 8 has secured multiple 15-year leases valued between $7 billion and $9.8 billion each.
The infrastructure built for SHA-256 computations, including power purchase agreements and interconnection rights with utilities, is perfectly suited for hosting AI workloads.
