Bitcoin Mining and Batteries Cut ERCOT Revenues in Half
Javier Hermosa, an analyst at Traders Union, has identified a significant shift in the revenue structure of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) due to the influence of Bitcoin mining and battery storage systems. According to Hermosa, these activities have contributed to stabilizing ERCOT market prices through new nodal market dynamics. This stabilization has led to a dramatic decline in revenue from Emergency Reliability Service Commitments (ECRS) and other demand response programs, dropping from approximately $100,000 per megawatt annually in 2023 to just $13,000 in 2025.
Hermosa attributes this change to the self-regulating nature of the market structure, where Bitcoin mining and battery storage act as flexible load responses. He previously highlighted the importance of Bitcoin mining in supporting grid reliability, particularly in Europe, where it aids in integrating renewable energy sources like wind and solar, along with AI-driven solutions. This perspective aligns with his view that Bitcoin mining and battery activities are crucial for stabilizing ERCOT market prices.
