Bitcoin Mining as a Tool for Ukraine's Stranded Electricity
Ukraine's reconstruction efforts face a massive $588 billion bill over ten years, with nearly $91 billion allocated for energy recovery. According to estimates by BPI, 750 MW of stranded power could generate about $1 billion over five years.
A study in Ireland found that a 20 MW mining site absorbed 83% of curtailed wind power and lifted revenue by 32%. The same research suggested that miners can operate beside generation sites, consuming stranded electricity without requiring the same grid access as industry.
Bitcoin mining could serve as a flexible buyer for electricity in Ukraine's damaged system. Miners could reduce or halt usage when demand rises elsewhere, making them particularly relevant during reconstruction. This flexibility is crucial given the scale of Ukraine's energy damage and broader rebuilding needs.
