Bitcoin Mining Companies Diversify into AI Data Centers Amid Profitability Slump
As Bitcoin's price continues to slump, numerous mining companies are transitioning towards the AI data center business. This trend is accelerating rapidly due to the decreasing profitability of mining.
Cipher Digital's Q2 financials illustrate this shift: interest expenses reached $66.7 million, while mining revenue was only $24.8 million, a ratio of nearly 2.7 to 1.
Furthermore, Cipher sold 1,619 BTC in the first half of the year, generating $120 million, yet still suffered a $47.7 million loss.
Hut 8 is one of the most thorough mining companies transitioning into AI computing centers. As of June, it had signed AI data center capacity contracts totaling 949 MW, with base contract value of about $26.6 billion.
