Bitcoin Mining Costs Outpaced Rewards in 2010: A Forgotten Turning Point

Bitcoin's early days were marked by struggles for miners to break even due to high electricity costs. A forum post from September 7, 2010, has resurfaced showing a user, TTBit, calculating the cost of mining one block on a home computer. He used a Kill-A-Watt meter to measure consumption and estimated it would take about 14 days and 2 hours to mine one block.

The electricity use was calculated at about 47.3 kilowatt-hours, with an electricity rate of 12 cents per kWh making the cost $5.68 to mine one block. TTBit deemed this a 'net loss' due to the negligible market value of Bitcoin at the time.

However, this situation has dramatically changed since then. The debate over whether mining or buying was more advantageous continued in the forum, with some users discussing the possibility of using graphics processing units (GPUs) for mining.

Satoshi Nakamoto also participated in the discussion, estimating that a 24-core AMD system could reach performance of about 66,000 kilohashes. Concerns about rising mining difficulty were already being raised then, with one user predicting it could rise to about 6,672 by the end of 2010.
