Bitcoin Mining Industry Shifts Towards Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure
The Bitcoin mining industry is undergoing a significant transformation as companies pivot from cryptocurrency mining to artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. According to Woofun AI, the computing power of publicly listed Bitcoin mining companies has declined by 13.4% in the past six months, a rate of contraction far exceeding that of the Bitcoin network as a whole.
This marked divergence indicates that capital and electricity resources are shifting on a large scale from cryptocurrency mining to AI-related infrastructure, fundamentally reshaping the industry's underlying logic. The computing power of other listed mining companies, excluding Bitdeer (BTDR.US), plummeted 21.2% over six months, while Bitdeer saw its hash rate rise by 44%. In contrast, the average hash rate of the Bitcoin network fell by only 10.6% during the same period.
The traditional mining companies are actively divesting or scaling back their mining capacities as they shift towards high-performance computing. Core Scientific (CORZ.US) reported server hosting revenue of $136.7 million in the second quarter, far surpassing its Bitcoin mining revenue of $27.5 million. Similarly, TeraWulf (WULF.US) posted $31.9 million in high-performance computing revenue, exceeding its mining business's $12.8 million.
