Bitcoin Mining Project Aims to Bring Innovative Agriculture to Rural Area
Dustin Wolgemuth addressed the Lee County Board of Supervisors about his proposed bitcoin mining project, which he claims will not only mine cryptocurrency but also provide an innovative agricultural solution.
Wolgemuth showed plans for a container that would serve as a bitcoin mining operation, which would create heat. Instead of venting this heat into the atmosphere, Wolgemuth plans to use it in other buildings on the property. He believes this will be beneficial for fish tanks and aquaponics - a type of vegetable growing operation.
The facility would utilize waste from the fish as nitrates to grow produce, which Wolgemuth wants to donate to the community initially. This project has been met with concerns from residents about water usage and noise levels. Wolgemuth assured the board that his project will not use large amounts of water and will be relatively quiet, comparable to a vacuum.
The Lee County Supervisors have been working on an ordinance for data centers and are hoping to define what constitutes a data center in the new regulations. Supervisor Garry Seyb asked Wolgemuth to be patient as they work towards finalizing the ordinance by December.
