Bitcoin Mining's Shift Towards Cleaner Energy Sparks Debate
Bitcoin mining's environmental impact has long been a contentious issue, but new research from the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance suggests that the industry is becoming greener. According to the report, low-carbon energy now accounts for 59.4% of Bitcoin's power mix, with hydropower overtaking natural gas as the network's largest source of electricity.
Despite this shift towards cleaner energy sources, the industry is consuming more energy than ever, with annual electricity consumption reaching around 190 TWh. This growing demand has sparked debate over whether the environmental problems associated with Bitcoin mining are being solved.
Some critics argue that improvements in electricity sourcing should not distract from the network's growing energy demand and broader environmental costs, including electronic waste. Others believe that Bitcoin mining can play a positive role by absorbing surplus renewable generation and reducing consumption during periods of peak demand.
The industry's changing energy mix appears to be driven as much by economics as by environmental ambition. Miners are rewarded for finding the lowest-cost electricity, regardless of its source, pushing them toward regions where energy is abundant and inexpensive.
