Bitcoin Network Difficulty Reaches 132.76 Trillion
The Bitcoin network difficulty has reached a new high of 132.76 trillion on September 28, 2026, following a 4.16% increase on September 19. This upward trend follows a 10.09% decrease in June, which was preceded by a 7.76% drop in March and an 11.16% decline in February.
The difficulty mechanism adjusts block production to maintain a ten-minute target by comparing the actual time elapsed against the target of 1,209,600 seconds. If blocks arrive faster than the target, difficulty increases; if they arrive slower, difficulty decreases.
Historical patterns were broken when difficulty increased in the first post-halving epoch due to transaction fees from the Runes protocol launch in 2024. The current trend follows the end of 2025, when difficulty sat at 148.2 trillion.
