Bitcoin Network Fees Explained: Why They're So High
When sending Bitcoin, users may be surprised by high network fees. The amount of BTC being transferred does not directly determine the network fee.
The primary factors influencing Bitcoin network fees are demand for block space, transaction size in virtual bytes (vBytes), and the chosen fee rate. When the Bitcoin network is busy, users compete for limited block space, pushing fee rates higher.
Transaction fees can be calculated using the formula: Transaction size × fee rate = total network fee. For example, a 200 vByte transaction with a fee rate of 50 sat/vByte would cost approximately 10,000 satoshis.
A larger transaction size, not the amount of BTC being transferred, contributes to higher fees. Users can reduce their fees by waiting for lower demand periods, choosing lower fee rates, or using advanced wallets that allow manual fee selection.
