Bitcoin Options Expiration Looms: $16 Billion at Stake Today
The $16 billion Bitcoin options expiration today is expected to have a significant impact on cryptocurrency markets. The expiry comes after a volatile week for Bitcoin, which has seen its price drop from an eight-month high above $87,000 to around $84,000.
Deribit CEO Luuk Strijers noted that options open interest had climbed above $50 billion, representing about 74% of market open interest. One-third of this OI is set to expire today, adding to the potential volatility.
The put/call ratio is below 1, indicating a mildly bullish positioning or hedging bias. However, this does not establish where Bitcoin will trade after expiry.
Large butterfly trades have appeared around October expiry dates, targeting $95,000 for October 30. These trades include short-dated calls intended to finance the trades.
