Bitcoin Options Expiry Looms: Dealer Hedging Sets Stage for Volatility

Bitcoin traders face a significant challenge this Friday as $6.44 billion in options expire on Deribit, covering 81,700 BTC contracts.

The expiry is concentrated at the $75,000 and $80,000 strikes, putting dealer hedging flows in control of short-term price action.

Deribit Chief Risk Officer Shaun Fernando noted that over $500 million in notional value is positioned within 5% of Bitcoin's current market price.

The concentration may result in unusual pinning around key strikes or accelerate moves through them, according to Fernando.
