Bitcoin Outperforms Coinbase Stock in Latest Investment Showdown
Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) has long been promoted as a stable way to invest in cryptocurrency without directly holding it, but recent performance data tells a different story. Over the past year, Coinbase shares have dropped by 51%, while Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) has fallen by 30%. This stark contrast has reignited the debate over which investment offers better value and long-term stability.
As of early October 2026, Coinbase shares were trading at $183, while Bitcoin was priced around $86,189. The numbers highlight a significant gap in performance. An investor who allocated $10,000 to each asset a year ago would now have approximately $4,900 in Coinbase shares and about $7,000 in Bitcoin. Over a five-year period, Coinbase’s stock has declined by 21%, while Bitcoin has risen by about 67%, even after a recent 32% drop from its peak of $126,080.
The volatility of Coinbase stock can be attributed to the business risks associated with the company. Unlike Bitcoin, which is a single asset, Coinbase’s revenue depends on trading activity, operational costs, competition, and regulatory challenges. This makes its stock more susceptible to market fluctuations. However, during strong crypto rallies, Coinbase can benefit from increased trading volume, potentially outperforming Bitcoin in the short term.
Historically, one advantage of investing in Coinbase was the ease of including its shares in retirement accounts. However, the introduction of spot Bitcoin ETFs has leveled the playing field, allowing investors to gain Bitcoin exposure within traditional brokerage accounts. This development has further diminished Coinbase’s appeal as a safer investment option.
