Bitcoin Outperforms Gold Amid Bond Market Volatility

A recent analysis from Bitwise Investments has found that Bitcoin shows weaker correlation to Treasury yields than gold, positioning it as a more resilient hard asset.

The data suggests that when bond yields spike and Treasury prices drop, gold tends to flinch more than Bitcoin does. In fact, during the latest divergence, which was triggered by the US Treasury's announcement to double its liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated bonds, Bitcoin posted a 22.4% weekly gain, while gold climbed around 5%.

The backdrop of rising US gross federal debt, which surpassed $40 trillion in August 2026, adds significance to this finding. Bitwise's analysis indicates that the relationship between Bitcoin and gold has tightened considerably, with their 90-day rolling correlation exceeding 0.5 as of August 31, 2026.

The study points out that Bitcoin doesn't sit inside institutional fixed-income portfolios' allocation models yet, which explicitly link gold positioning to real yield expectations. This means that when yields rise, those models reduce gold exposure almost mechanically. In contrast, Bitcoin's issuance schedule is coded into its protocol and entirely indifferent to what the Federal Reserve or the Treasury Department does.
