Bitcoin Payments in El Zonte Vanish Amid Low Adoption Concerns
A Bitcoin Core contributor, Jon Atack, has expressed concern about the low adoption level of bitcoin payments in El Salvador. Despite being hailed as a pioneer in embracing cryptocurrency, the country's experience with bitcoin payments is not as rosy as expected.
Atack, who has been living in El Salvador since 2022 and has been involved with Bitcoin Core since 2019, shared his observation after paying with bitcoin at El Zonte, also known as Bitcoin Beach. He stated that the person he paid said it was the first bitcoin payment there all month.
Atack highlighted that this is a significant decline from what used to be a thriving environment for bitcoin payments in the region. When asked about how most customers pay, the server replied that almost all of them use cards.
This anecdotal experience sparked both positive and negative reactions on social media. Some commentators pointed out that there is an economics problem at hand and that no one seems to be taking it seriously. Others refuted Atack's experience, with one user claiming to have paid with bitcoin without issue during a recent visit to the same region.
