Bitcoin Payments Vanish in El Salvador's Bitcoin Beach

A recent visit to El Zonte, also known as Bitcoin Beach in El Salvador, left Bitcoin Core contributor Jon Atack feeling disheartened. He paid with bitcoin at a local eatery and was met with a surprising response from the staff.

'Lunched in El Zonte (Bitcoin Beach) today,' Atack tweeted. 'After I paid, they told me it was the first bitcoin payment there all month, going on to describe how before, they used to see many payments in bitcoin, and that now it’s practically non-existent.'

Atack, who has been living in El Salvador since 2022, highlighted that this observation was anecdotal but emphasized that the staff member had seen a significant decline in bitcoin payments over the past few months. The person, who worked at the eatery for three years, mentioned that most customers now pay by card.

This exchange sparked a mix of reactions on social media, with some users defending Atack's experience and others refuting it. Bitcoin reporter Juan Galt pointed out an 'economics problem' in El Salvador, suggesting that an altruistic behavior is needed for bitcoin payments to push a circular economy.
