Bitcoin Plunges as Oil Prices Soar Past $100 per Barrel
Oil prices soared to $100 per barrel, triggering a correction in the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin, which had reached an eight-month high of over $87,000, fell by 1.6% to $82,882. This downturn was accompanied by similar declines in other major cryptocurrencies such as Ether and XRP.
The sharp increase in oil prices was largely due to the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, which led to a tightening of global financial conditions. The U.S. Treasury yields also strengthened, driven by long-term bond yields moving in tandem with a rising dollar. As a result, investors' required expected returns on Bitcoin rose, making it less appealing.
Despite this pullback, some analysts believe that the uptrend remains intact and has yet to run its course. They view this correction as only a temporary pause along the way higher for cryptocurrencies. The market is now waiting to see whether macroeconomic pressures ease and if position adjustments follow the expiration of $15 billion in Bitcoin options on Friday.
